Currently, women represent about 15 percent of the active duty military, 16 percent of the reserves and about 20 percent of new recruits. About 10 percent of the U.S. force serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are women. The total veteran population in the United States and Puerto Rico, as of September 2009, was approximately 23 million, and the population of women veterans numbered 1,824,198.
